Summer is a busy time of year for all of us and life at College Manor is no different. It is the best opportunity to spend just as much time outside as we do indoors. Our residents have been outside tending to their vegetable gardens, taking evening walks around the campus, relaxing under the of the pavilion or taking in the beautiful gardens that surround our patio. While we are proud of our awe-inspiring campus, we also like to get residents out, on the town, for some different experiences. This past July, residents went to Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., at the Inner Harbor. The view of the Harbor was as stunning as the seafood was delicious.
June has been a busy month so far at College Manor. This week we had our very first Canvas & Cocktails night and it was a success. Residents followed along as our art teacher, Laura Numsen, took them through the brush strokes of creating a beautiful picture. Best of all, we had a handful of family members that came out to spend the evening with their loved ones. You can see some of this impressive artwork displayed on our chapel stage.
Wednesday afternoon was a pleasant surprise for residents as they went outside to meet the Kona Ice snowball truck :). Anyone that didn’t want to move, had their snowball treat hand-delivered. Boom!
One of our more adventurous residents has decided to undertake a garden of his own. Mr. B didn’t want anything traditional. He and another family member had seen the idea for a hay garden in a book he was reading last month titled, “Straw Bale Gardens” by Joel Karstein. So, we sectioned off a piece of the property that would get plenty of sun and could fit their 3 straw bales. Mr. B started by planting tomato and bell pepper seeds in potting soil on top of the hay. He then placed bamboo stalks for the vines to climb and CD’s across string to scare away any unwanted intruders. Within a few days, he had sprouts. Within a couple weeks, he had stalks. No cows on this farm yet but I do believe that he is off to a great start!
See you all tomorrow night!

The boys from St. Paul’s School came out to College Manor for 3 consecutive days last week! Our residents enjoyed the company of these young gentleman as they joked around playing charades, hangman and of course, bingo. We see a lot of volunteers come through our doors but these guys were a pleasant change. We are looking forward to the next visit. Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!
Roderick is a local Baltimore artist who attends the Peabody Institute of John’s Hopkins University. He comes to College Manor each month for a special concert. We hope to have even more ,uber-talented students, come perform at College Manor this spring.
